Reactions

Reactions types include: E-mail, SNMP Trap, Numerical Page or Custom Reaction (a script). Reactions are enacted when thresholds are exceeded. Reactions are applied to Events, that is you can assign up to two reactions to every Event.

To Edit, Add or Apply a reaction, go to Tools then click on Reactions.


Reactions window launches in which you can: 

  • Search for a specific reaction by using the Search field at the bottom of the screen.



    Type a keyword in the search box and then click to find the reactions you're looking for, or click to launch all defined reactions.
  • Customize reactions Window columns by clicking on the Search arrow at the bottom of the Reactions screen



    Or by mouse over the column then clicking on the arrow beside any of the column at the top of the Events screen then choose columns. By default all columns are shown, you can uncheck any columns you don't want to see or check any columns you want to see in your Events page. You can also sort any column in Ascending or Descending order.



  • Edit Any Reaction by clicking on the Reaction icon . Reaction Edit Window Opens:



    Each reaction has the following required parameters:

    Reaction Type
    This is the type of the reaction to be triggered when a certain event's threshold is exceeded. Reactions types include: E-mail, SNMP Trap, Numerical Page or Custom Reaction (a script)

    Execute on
    Select the option when you need the reaction to be triggered.

    • Event Start and Event End: When the Event is triggered and when the problem is fixed. For example, if the web server goes down you will receive the reaction and when the web server comes back up you will receive the reaction.
    • Event Start Only: When the Event is triggered. For example, if the web server goes down.
    • Event End Only: When the problem is fixed. For example, if the web server comes back up.

    Reaction Name
    This is a unique name given to the reaction

    Email Reactions:

    • Type the E-mail address(es). Separate multiple E- mail addresses with commas.
    • Type text into the subject field. This is the subject line of the E-mail to be sent. To insert one or more alert variables, select the variable from the drop down list on the right side of the Subject field. Do this for each variable you wish to add.
    • Type the text message that will appear in the body of this E-mail alert. Insert variables as desired by selecting the variable from the drop down list. Do this for each variable you wish to add.

    Custom Reactions:

    • Type the commands to execute the script you would like to run. Select variables from the drop list. The selected program or script must be on the same machine where Chroniker is installed.

    Restart Reaction:

    • Restart What? Service, process, or the machine.
    • Host: In which host you need to restart service, process, or machine.
    • Name: Leave blank if you would like this restart reaction to start, the same service/process/computer that triggered the event. Otherwise, enter the alternative name of the service/process/computer that you would like to restart.
      When restarting a process, provide full path to the process binary, if it is not in the environment path.
      noteThe same option is only applicable, when this reaction is applied on a host/process/service being monitored by Systems.

    SNMP Trap:

    • Type the Host IP of the machine that receives the trap. You need to have a trap receiver program on the receiver machine.
    • Type the Port number. This is the port number the trap receiver uses (default is 126 when left blank).
    • Type text in the message field. This is the text that the trap receiver will get when the threshold is exceeded. Insert one or more Chroniker alert variables by selecting the variable from the drop down list on the right side of the message field.

    Description: Enter a meaningful description of this reaction.

  • Delete a reaction by clicking on the delete icon
  • You can apply a reaction to any event by editing or adding an Event and assigning it to either Reaction#1 or Reaction#2. All reactions you have defined will appear in Reaction#1 and Reaction#2 drop lists on the edit or add new Event pages.

  • You can add new reaction by clicking on the Add New Reaction button at the bottom of the screen. Reaction Form Window Opens.
