This getting started document is a walkthrough on how to install chroniker and define some basic monitoring metrics in different Chroniker monitors, and how to consolidates all the metrics in different business dashboards.
Below are the instructions that will help you:

Install Chroniker
- Download Chroniker 6.0 from the NRG Global web site (www.nrgglobal.com). This download contains one self-extracting zip file.
- Double click the Chroniker5Setup.exe file you downloaded.
- Follow the instructions to extract the installer program.
- Do one of the following:
- Navigate to the folder containing the extracted zip file. Double click Chroniker5Setup.
- In Windows, choose Start Run. Click Browse and choose the Chroniker5Setup.exe file you extracted.
- Click Next and read the license agreement.
- Click I Agree if you accept the terms of the license.
- Click the Next button.
- Enter the destination folder; the folder the application files will be placed.
- Click the Next button.
- Enter the Port number to be used by the Chroniker web server. This port number should not be used by other applications. The default is 8888.
- Click the Next button
- Enter the information about your E-mail server:
- Enter the email address you want the default email reaction alerts be sent to.
- Enter the SMTP address.
- Enter the from E-mail address. When you receive a Chroniker alert E-mail, this is the address the E-mail will be from.
If you do not know these parameters right now, you can modify them later from the Chroniker Setup menu (once you have the application running).
- Click the Install button.
- Click the Finish button after the installation is complete.
To Generate and Install License File:
Evaluation license: Chroniker comes with automatic 14 day license which activates all monitors.
Purchased License: If you are using a license issued to you, follow these instructions:
- Save the license file under: \license\ChronikerLicense.lic
The default install directory is C:\Program Files\Chroniker.
- Please make a backup copy of your license file and put it outside the Chroniker folder. In the event you reinstall, or the original license file is deleted for any reason, you will have this backup file.
- You are now ready to run Chroniker.
To Login to Chroniker for the First Time

Access the Chroniker Login page by performing one of the following:
- Click on the
Chroniker shortcut link on your desktop, or
- Go to Start | All Programs | Chroniker and then select Chroniker, or
- Open your web browser and enter the following URL: http://< host name>:< Your port number>
Note: this is the IP of the machine where chroniker installed and the port number you typed when you installed the application. This defaults port number is 8888. Example: http://localhost:8888
Login and change password as follows :
- Type "admin" in the User Name field and "admin" in the Password field (case sensitive), and then click the Login button.
- To change the password: Go to "Setup" menu in the top menu bar. Click on the "Change Your Password" link
- Enter chroniker (case sensitive) in the Current Password field and then type your new password in the Type New Password field and the same new password in the Retype New Password
- Click the Submit button
• After you have installed and activated Chroniker, Click on "Launch Chroniker" button
• The Chroniker home page will display the activated Chroniker monitors.
Nodes Monitor
Monitors the response time and availability of your servers, network devices, and any TCP Connect based application through ICMP/ping checks.
Autodiscover IPs, hosts, and ports in your network easily by going to Setup-> Chroniker Initial Setup in the Chroniker Interface.

Tasks Monitor
monitors the response time of your Web Servers, Mail Servers, FTP, DNS, LDAP, and Active Directory servers, and Databases, etc. by running user defined tests.

monitors server performance metrics, such as CPU, memory, disk (or file systems), files, processes, and applications.

Dashboards
Now that we have added a few tests in different Chroniker monitors, let us get a customized and consolidated view of all those tests in moduleComprehensive, flexible view of all the metrics and services. A Dashboard is an intuitive representation of the performance information. The information is organized in logical groups called Services.

Defining Alerts
To setup alerts that will be triggered when your monitor goes down or its response time exceeds a certain threshold, you need to:
- Define a Reaction. Reactions are enacted when thresholds are exceeded.
- In the Monitor's Page, click on Reactions link in the Tools menu
- Click on "Add New Reaction" and select the type of reactions you want to define: email, custom, numerical page, restart, or SNMP trap.
- Fill out the form.

- Define an Event that the reaction will be applied to. Events will launch your predefined reactions when conditions you define are met. You can assign up to 2 reactions per event.
- In the Monitor's Page, click on the events link in the Tools menu
- Click on "Add New Event" button and fill out the form.

- Apply this event to your Monitor(s):
- In the event page, click on the "Apply Event" button which is the first button to the left of the event you want to apply
- Select your Monitor(s) from the list
- Click "Apply"
Note: you can also apply a predefined event to a Monitor by clicking on the edit button next to the Monitor in the Monitor's page.
